NBA MVP Race Heats Up With New Contenders
SGA leads MVP race as Jokic, Wembanyama push challenge.

SPORTSGilgeous-Alexander Leads Competitive MVP Race
For the first time in about 20 years, the NBA’s MVP race might actually be, well, a race. Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the clear favorite to win the MVP award again. He’s the best player on the league’s best team, and he has similar numbers to when he was the runaway winner a year ago. “I think it’s good for the league,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “It gives people something to talk about. There’s a lot of good players in this league and a lot of guys in the conversation because of that.”
Strong Competition From Star Players
Denver’s Nikola Jokic remains a perennial candidate and is putting together a season the likes of which have never been seen in NBA history. San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama has also made clear that he wants the award, while Boston’s Jaylen Brown has been hearing MVP chants for months after helping keep the Celtics competitive. Meanwhile, Luka Doncic is putting up elite numbers and will win the scoring title, though his eligibility remains uncertain due to the 65-game minimum rule.
Numbers Behind the MVP Candidates
Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 31.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game, with the Thunder holding a dominant record when he plays. Jokic is averaging 27.8 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.9 assists, nearing a historic triple-double season. Wembanyama contributes 24.8 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game, while Brown posts 28.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists. Doncic leads all scorers with 33.5 points per game alongside strong all-around production.
Historical Trends and Global Dominance
Voting history shows that MVP winners typically dominate first-place votes, with oddsmakers heavily favoring Gilgeous-Alexander. However, Jokic’s potential triple-double season highlights how statistical dominance does not always guarantee MVP recognition. The race also continues a trend of international dominance, with players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid, Jokic and Gilgeous-Alexander leading the award in recent years. This season could extend that streak further as global stars continue to define the league.
